About Beyond Symptoms
A group in which students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison interested in/pursuing healthcare professions read selected literature surrounding a variety of issues related to discrepancies in healthcare and discuss these topics via Zoom meetings every other week (until we can meet in person).
As an extension of current issues surrounding race and police brutality, we tend to neglect the fact that the intersection between race (and other identities and “differences”) is another relevant way in which marginalized groups are systematically oppressed and discriminated against. As future healthcare professionals, we have a duty to look beyond individual “differences,” be advocates for equitable, quality healthcare and to embody these values in the care we provide our future patients. This begins with us recognizing our privilege, educating ourselves and each other on these issues, and using our voices to uplift and empower ALL people. By taking action in both our personal and professional lives, we can positively change the institution(s) we will be working in and interacting with in the near future.
